It’s been more than 3 years since the devastating Covid 19 pandemic struck and shook the world. Looking back we all realise how our lives have changed forever in more ways than one. Although the medical emergency is over, its ill effects still linger on in most of the us, leaving us anxious, fearful, stressed and often depressed. Living in these uncertain and difficult times has taken a huge toll on our mental health impacting our relationships, academic and job performances, financial condition and our self worth. We are all in it together, if that is any solace. But as they say, “tough times do not last, tough people do”.
As a psychologist, I would like to share some simple and doable strategies that will help readers deal with life’s challenges and manage some of the common mental health issues quite effectively.
- Firstly, let me remind you that these feelings are natural responses to difficult situations, so learn to accept them and focus on your thoughts and energies towards:
- Identify the actual problems, tackle them part by part, seek advice from people you trust and use innovative and non conventional ways to deal with them.
- Take on the challenge of learning new skills like new technology, language, craft, art, playing a musical instrument etc. This will not only help at work and in life but more importantly provide a sense of achievement.
- We all need caring and loving people around us and good relationships are crucial for better mental health. So, cultivate and nurture healthy relationships with family and friends.
- All of us deserve to have some fun time, so take time off to take up interesting activities like sports, music, theatre, painting, dance, gardening etc. which give pure joy and will act like a tonic for mental health.
- Healthy mind exists in a healthy body, so eat a balanced diet, sleep well and at regular times, engage in routine physical exercises, take long walks and practise relaxation techniques like yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, mindfulness etc.
- Avoid certain engagements like alcohol, tobacco, other harmful substances and limit use of social media and technology. This will help in staying calm.
In addition, I recommend a powerful Technique of 5 that has worked wonders for many in overcoming negative feelings of fear, anxiety, stress and even anger. Just try it- wherever you are, focus on:
5 things you can see , 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste
But if you think none of the above tips have helped you and you continue to feel miserable do reach out and talk to friends and family who love and care for you. There is nothing wrong in seeking assistance and sharing your feelings.
Last, but most importantly, do not hesitate to seek professional help from a psychologist, therapist or counsellor who can provide timely support and valuable strategies tailored to your needs. Remember, with a little effort and the right support you can overcome challenges and certainly hope for a brighter future ahead.
